Lobby Lounge will come alive every Saturday night from 7-10pm with the soulful sounds of live jazz, featuring a talented resident piano player – Sam Smylie.

About Sam Smylie:

Sam Smylie is an accomplished American jazz composer and songwriter based in Santa Monica, California. His musical journey began in his hometown of San Diego, where he studied piano under the tutelage of local jazz pianist Danny Green. He later graduated from the Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, led by trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos, and was mentored by bassist Rob Thorsen. Sam’s unique piano style opened doors for him to perform with local reggae and surf rock bands, including SensiTrails and Foxtide.

To further his musical education, Sam moved to Los Angeles County and enrolled in the Applied Music Program at Santa Monica College. During this time, he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned Los Angeles organist Joe Bagg and exceptional jazz vocalist Gina Saputo. He also had the privilege of being mentored by and playing with Grammy Award-winning bassist Stanley Clarke. These experiences were pivotal in elevating his musical abilities and deepening his understanding of jazz.

Since relocating to Los Angeles, Sam has played in the future sounds of jazz festival alongside Stanley Clarke, held a residency at the Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire in partnership with the “Nothing but Jazz” series and has performed at notable venues including the Moroccan Lounge, Herb Alpert’s Vibrato, Townhouse Venice, Stowaway Piano Bar, Tatel, and the Rosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. Sam has also served as the musical director and bandleader for the Late-Late Show with Jack Harris.

Sam’s compositions blend traditional jazz elements with innovative improvisation, reflecting the vibrant sound emerging from Southern California. Through his enriching experiences and collaborations, Sam Smylie has developed a distinctive and captivating sound that continues to push the boundaries of contemporary jazz, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his art.
